Spirit of the north ps5 review7/31/2023 ![]() ![]() One of the game’s few narrative devices, it did a really good job of guiding me through each area and complementing each moment.Īside from the soundtrack, the story is borne from the environment itself. ![]() However, it also wasn’t scared of ramping things up when called upon or stirring up emotions when the story called for it. The soothing twinkle of piano complemented calmer moments, gently asking me to take in my surroundings and slow down the pace. A beautiful orchestral score follows the player throughout the game and never gets old. One area where Spirit of the North does shine, however, is its soundtrack. There are moments here - trampling through snow, sliding on sheets of ice, getting stuck in tar - that would have felt much better had the tech been implemented. After all, it’s early days yet and it’s easy to give Infuse Studio the benefit of the doubt and say they didn’t have time. Now, I’m not knocking the game too much for this. Similarly disappointing, although to a lesser degree, is a lack of implementation of the DualSense controller. There is some nice work done with light and shadows, particularly given that there’s plenty of spiritual glowing going on, but to put such a thing on a podium when the fundamentals are lacking seems trivial. It can look good in motion too but, whilst environments can often be sped through, stopping to explore only serves to highlight more of the game’s glaring issues. ![]() The game’s landscapes can appear beautiful at first, but on closer inspection they just don’t hold up. I wasn’t expecting Spirit of the North to be a graphical powerhouse by any means but, this being the ‘Enhanced Edition’ of the game, it did very little to take advantage of the power of the PlayStation 5. ![]()

Mouseless web navigation7/31/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The idea of visualizing a user’s journey through the web as a trail is by no means a new one. Optionally opening pages in a new trail.Allowing annotation of trails so users can record their thoughts while researching a topic.Persisting trails in a form as they were during the visit, so that they can be revisited (offline).Fading trails as they become irrelevant and eventually moving them off the grid.Sharing not just URLs but entire trails. This provides us with opportunities to explore further enhancements to the user experience. And yet each navigation trail is a tab that tells a complete story from start to finish. Users can continue using browsers as they always have. This is intentional: our goal is to enhance existing user experiences, not to replace them. If you ignore the paths leading up to each explored topic, trails are no different from conventional tabs. This is what Nala would have actually seen: Tabs and trails: the same, but different. Luckily, that can be removed by focusing on a single trail while folding the others. On the other hand, duplicates lead to a lot of distracting visual noise. The benefit is that a trail tells a self-contained story from left to right. So that’s what we display to the user (Version 3):Įach row represents a trail from the root of the navigation tree to a result. ![]() What we think matters most is not where each exploration diverged, but the complete path leading to a result. With Browser.html we are prototyping a user interface that tells not just the fragments of Nala’s history that a tabbed browser preserves (Version 1), but all of it (Version 2):īut these trees can easily get intricate. Of course, browsers typically provide tools like history views and “recent tabs” menus, but none of these presents a narrative that matches the actual course Nala followed. In this example of a common search scenario, more than a third of the history is lost! To look at the results of her initial search results again, Nala goes back a few steps in the history of the first tab and opens another pizza venue directly from there (10). Now when she selects a new restaurant (8), part of the current tab’s navigation history is lost as well:Ĭlicking an external link to the next restaurant’s website again opens a new tab (9), and again severs the connection from the history that preceded it. The browser’s amnesia compounds as she goes to look at more options: switching back to the first tab (6) and navigating back to the Yelp results (7), she looks for another restaurant. All history about how Nala got to the restaurant’s website is lost! The new tab doesn’t have any history, or any connection to the first tab. She follows a link to a list of restaurants on Yelp (3), and checks out a promising pizza joint (4).Įxternal links on Yelp open in separate tabs, so when Nala clicks a link to a restaurant’s website, it starts a new tab (5). In her traditional, tabbed browser, she sets off with a search (1) that takes her to a page of search results (2). To illustrate the kind of scenario we’re thinking about, we’ll introduce you to our friend Nala. Our hope is that our work might help advance the state of browsing closer to the ideal of a tool that enhances our cognitive process, rather than increasing our cognitive load. The goal of trails is to construct not only a window into web content but a narrative of user activity. With Browser.html, a Mozilla Research project aimed at building a browser user interface built in HTML for nightly builds of Servo, we are experimenting with evolving the standard tabbed browser towards a model based on trails. Since the early 2000’s, the desktop metaphor of tabbed browsing has dominated the way we navigate the web. By Patryk Adaś Lossless Web Navigation with Trails ![]()

Fdl police scanner7/31/2023 ![]() ![]() Lamb says while he shares in that outrage, the movement across the country to defund police has been disheartening and demoralizing to those in the profession and has created a nationwide shortage of police recruits.įortunately, he said, Fond du Lac is a community that has shown great support for its police officers. ![]() ![]() In solidarity, Fond du Lac police officers walked with residents who participated in protests and peace rallies held in the city. Anti-police sentiment causes added stressĪnti-police rhetoric and outrage followed the death of George Floyd while in police hands on May 25 in Minneapolis. “Our enforcement efforts entail a variety of measures in an effort to address the problems everything from education, to warnings, to citations/arrests as circumstances are deemed necessary,” the chief said. Officers are currently working with a group of primarily younger teens that have been causing some problems in and around the Hamilton Place and Military Road area - a combination of blocking streets and sidewalks, disorderly language and behavior, Lamb said. ![]() “But recently we have been able to correct a majority of these problems." "The property changed hands a couple years ago and the relationship with management went by the wayside,” Lamb said. Crime in this neighborhood has dropped by 60%. He pointed to the southeast side of the city, around the Maplewood Commons apartment complex, as a problem area police have successfully addressed. “These are the most troublesome crimes, and a source of concern and complaint for people who live here," the chief said. Property crime totals - the most frequently occurring crimes - attributed to that downward trend, with burglaries down 27 percent (from 892 in 2018 to 707 in 2019) and thefts down 21% (from 892 to 707). Looking back on other 2019 trends, Lamb said the good news is the city's overall crime rate dropped to a new, ten-year low. So far, there have been no cases of COVID-19 reported within the department. It was difficult for officers to use personal protection equipment and officers were often out of commission because of the need to self-quarantine he said. “And until society adds additional medical resources to help these people, the problem will get increasingly worse.”ĬOVID-19 also took its toll on the force, Lamb said, and made it tough to effectively and safely police in the midst of a pandemic. “We get calls when people hit crisis levels,” Lamb said. Lamb told City Council that dealing with mental illness calls in the community remains one of the department’s greatest challenges. Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit the city in March, the number of police responses to drug overdoses, suicides and suicide attempts have increased. “This is the last city in the state of Wisconsin that you want to engage in illegal drug trafficking.” Mental health suffers under COVID-19 “The message we are sending is clear,” Lamb said. Lamb notes this was the largest seizure of meth in the city’s history.Īnother record drug bust for the city occurred last November, when one-half pound of crack cocaine and one-third pound of heroin with a street value of $55,000 was seized during arrests made in a Detroit-to-Fond du Lac trafficking network. Seven months later, four persons were arrested following an investigation into a Mississippi-to-Fond du Lac meth ring, during which police seized 3.5 pounds of meth valued at $54,000. Approximately 127 pounds of cocaine with a street value of $9.6 million was trafficked through this network, Lamb said. In January 2019 the ringleader of a 31-person cocaine distribution conspiracy network that operated from Chicago to Milwaukee to Fond du Lac was taken into custody. Over the past six and half years, 488 people have been arrested by Fond du Lac police for felony drug trafficking and related offenses. The majority of these shootings are drug-related, Lamb said, and reflect what he calls an epidemic of gun/drug crimes in the U.S. Both men have since been charged - one with attempted first-degree intentional homicide. Approximately a week ago another shooting incident occurred near Morris and 12th streets, the chief said.Įarlier this summer, two individuals in broad daylight got into a gun fight in the middle of Bank Street. Most recently, on a Saturday night, shots were fired by an irate, intoxicated person near Second and Portland streets. Since January 2019, police have been called out 44 times to investigate serious gun threats - 15 in which shots were fired. In his crime report to Fond du Lac City Council last week, Lamb reported domestic and aggravated assaults are up as much as 70%, and incidents involving guns and drugs - as well as calls for mental health crises - spiked last year.Īnd that upward trend continues to keep officers busy this year. FOND DU LAC - Violent crimes in the city are up 45% and the Fond du Lac Police Department remains in dire need of more officers, according to Chief Bill Lamb. ![]()

Dying light switch7/31/2023 ![]() ![]() To Dying Light's credit, though, your adversaries are surprisingly capable while the rank-and-file Biters are dumb and fun to manipulate, more powerful enemies – like the quick, agile Virals – are formidable close-quarters opponents, ducking your strikes and sidestepping out of your reach while looking for an opening to attack. And while the guns you'll find later can pop heads from a distance, their low rate of fire and zombie-attracting noise makes them more of an occasional quick fix than a game-changing weapon. Even when expertly shredding zombies with elementally charged tools of death I built myself, strikes are still heavy and clumsy. ![]() It all feels great, too once you adjust to the controls, Dying Light's first-person parkour becomes natural and fluid, and weaving high-speed paths through its decaying slums and picturesque old-world buildings is so much fun that I almost don't hate the lack of a fast-travel option.Ĭombat, meanwhile, gets increasingly satisfying, although it never quite loses its awkwardness. Even nighttime becomes an opportunity to raise skills faster thanks to increased XP gain, rather than a period of sheer terror. So is attracting the attention of the much more dangerous things that come out when daytime dynamically gives way to night, at which point the focus shifts to tense stealth - or, if you’re discovered, an adrenaline-pumping sprint for the nearest safe point.īefore long, though, you'll build up a skill set that turns your rotting foes into objects of fun, letting you vault across their shoulders, quickly slice them apart with dramatic slow-motion kills, or trick them into gathering around explosives before blasting them all into the sky. Getting mobbed is usually a death sentence. Jumping – which is unintuitively mapped to shoulder buttons on consoles – can take a while to get used to. Combat is initially clumsy, with the diverse and deadly zombies able to soak up a disturbing amount of punishment before they die for good. Yes, it's a struggle to survive in Dying Light's early hours. ![]()

Engine ice coolant7/30/2023 ![]() ![]() The purpose of the coolant cocktail isn't for all season cooling, its' specifically for those in hot climates that want to efficiently carry the heat away from the engine, which 50/50 coolant does a poor job of. Engine oil needs to reach 230-240 to clean the acids out. The coolant fan comes on at 203* and off at 194*. So you can see how cool your bike is running.Īnd I don't lower fan temp in my flashes unless it's on the area P flash or someone specifically requests it. Use the second post, he considered the 1st (below the line) bar that I did not consider. Here's an old post as to what each bar represents. New oil, oil filter, air filter, and engine ice coolant contributed to this seat of the pants observation. and strong, compared to before I did the maintenance. I have no measurement to factually prove this, it just sounded and felt really smooth. The engine seemed to be running really strong today. I will be riding a long trip this summer to MOAB with another COG member, he has a '12 C-14 and well maintained. I have no way to tell what the water temp is or what each mark on the gauge signifies temp wise. When I got back to the house, I had to let it sit in my driveway for 4 minutes before the temp would go up to the 4th mark and the fans finally kicked on, for about 15 seconds then the tuned off for about 1 minute, then turned back on for 15 seconds again turned back off. Once I got to traffic and stopped for a light, the temp went to the third mark and once I started moving, the temp went back to the 2nd mark. The temp stayed at the 2nd mark on the HWY. Today I was running on the hwy at about 60-70. I have a flashed ecu, so the fans kick on somewhere in the 4th mark. On this and my last bike, the temp gauge would warm up and stay at the 4th mark and occasionally it would get to the 5th mark. BUT it definitely was running cooler based on the temperature gauge. As for the Engine Ice, it was 60 deg today so not much of a stress on the cooling system. Took the bike out today after all the maintenance tasks. Is there anything you can think of to do while fairings off? (Valve check will be a while.) One more thing, I only want to pull these fairings 1 time if possible, So I have ready to install, LED turns, coolant, possibly BW headers, Air filter. I still need to do base line tests "as is" before doing the install. I will do my best to keep the COG informed of my findings. If you have any experience with ENGINE ICE or EVANS please share. I think the coolant is toast, may have air in the line, may be low on coolant, protector might be contributing heat, or may just be my over sensitive observations. I noticed the fans coming on at idle, more than with last bike, even in 36 deg weather. The bike has a B and G radiator protector. I am the 4th owner of this bike, I have been able to contact the last three and no one has done a flush and fill since new (13' with 8K MR flash). If flushed properly, it should last, I will be monitoring with infra temp gun. It is polyglycol, supposed to be better for environment and engine. I will need to do a thorough flushing before I put this in. I did my research and pulled the trigger on ENGINE ICE. I liked the idea of EVANS coolant but didn't like the "put it in once and never again", I also did not see any evidence that EVANS did a better job of cooling than traditional antifreeze. cocktail but saw some issues with WW and didn't want to recreate the cocktail with RP's ICE. I am looking to "help" the cooling system as much as possible especially with stop and go traffic. ![]() I am in the process of going through all fluids in my new to me bike. **** I live in the bottom of SC, very hot humid temps, I will also be traveling to Moab Utah in the summer**** ![]()

Long dark cabin fever7/30/2023 ![]() ![]() Winter is a great time to encourage reading within your family, especially for children who may not be so excited about it normally. Libraries are great resources for free, educational programs and activities, and often times, they also promote other local events on a community board. A great place to start is your local library. You can find activities in a variety of venues for a range of ages. Explore the Community!Ī quick Google search can tell you a lot about the fun (and often free!) events going on in your community. Whatever you do, you can be assured your children will feel refreshed once you return home. Build a snowman! Take a winter hike! Simply take a walk around the block. This idea may seem obvious however, from my many years of working as a nanny, I know the idea of heading outdoors with children on a cold and snowy day can seem like a Herculean task – especially when it seems like it takes longer to get the kids ready to go out than the time you actually end up spending outside! But stepping outside, even for just a few minutes, can go a long way in helping kids get some energy out. Avoid Cabin Fever: 5 Little Ideas for Big Winter Fun 1. However, I’ve compiled a list of some fun ideas for you and your kids that will hopefully help the end of winter pass at a relatively faster rate. Whatever the reason, though, winter boredom and cabin fever seem to be inevitable. Maybe, it’s the dark, or the snow, or the craziness we seem to feel after being stuck inside for so many months. The locations you need to spend 3 days in are listed in your journal.Winter feels so long, doesn’t it? Even though it is apparently about the same length as all of the other seasons, it just seems to drag on forever and ever. In early 2021 it took six days instead of the intended three, due to a bug. There is no danger of Cabin Fever, as the overall difficulty of the challenge uses Voyageur settings. There are more than one "Barn", so be wary of which you sleep in.The Stone Church provides very little protection from the elements and is by far the hardest location to survive. But it only advances during time spent inside the required location. It is not necessary to prepare for three complete consecutive days inside a location in one sitting - the timer does not reset if the player leaves. To complete the challenge in a timely way requires to plan ahead, so that the player does not have to double back to regions, to stay at locations they missed. There is no time limit to complete the challenge. The locations can be visited in any order. When the final location is complete, the challenge immediately ends, and the player cannot go back and look at the journal. ![]() Once the player has been at any location for three days, a notification will appear at the top right of the screen stating that the location is complete, and a green checkmark will appear next to the location in the journal. ![]() ![]() The journal automatically tracks how long the player has been at each location in increments of a tenth of a day. The locations are not located in any one region, but are scattered between the many different regions, spanning the world. It requires the player to spend three entire days in each location listed in their journal. The Nomad challenge is one of eight challenges in the Long Dark. ![]() |
